Choose The Correct Dog Collar For Your Dog
Dog collars can serve several purposes they can be used for fashion and looks. If you have a license for your dog you will need a collar to attach the dogs tags and license to. In fact all dogs should have a name tag, just in case. If you will be walking your dog then you will need a collar and leash to do so.
So for all practical purposes you will probably want a comfortable and durable collar for your dog. Usually nylon or leather will work well for this. You also want to choose a dog collar and lead that will match your pets size. Use smaller lightweight sizes for small dogs and puppies and heavier choices for larger dogs.
You want the collar to fit around the dogs neck and not ride down on his shoulder blades. But you need to be careful that it is a snug fit but not too tight. You should be able to fit two fingers between the dogs neck and collar. When choosing your first collar measure the dogs neck and then choose a collar two or three inches longer. Always check the dogs collar to make sure it fits properly.
You don’t want it to slide off over the dogs head, but you want to be careful not to restrict breathing or make your dog uncomfortable. Keep in mind that puppies are growing and their collars will need to be monitored to make sure that they are not too tight as your puppy grows.
If your dog has respiratory problems or problems with their throat or trachea, you will want to get a harness instead. A harness goes around the neck and shoulders and behind the front legs. This will relieve pressure put on the throat while walking your dog with a leash.
Some people may consider using chain-slip or choke chains colors on large dogs for training, and some even opt for pronged training collars. A better alternative to these are halter type dog collars. These collars will give you complete control over your dog because you control their head. If you control a dogs head it won’t be able to run ahead or take charge of the lead.
These collars look similar to a horses halter and some people have an aversion to them because they are similar looking to a muzzle. But if you have a hard to handle dog or a powerful dog that needs training these are a much better choice then the previous mentioned choke chains or pronged collars. In fact with proper training and the use of these collars you should have faster and better results. You and your pet will appreciate the kinder gentler and more effective approach.
Besides the practical function of dog collars there is something to be said for the fashion aspect of your dogs collar. Colors, materials, and design all have an impact on the impression you and your pet leave. A practical red nylon collar can portray a happy go lucky dog and owner, while a leather spiked color can portray a rougher tougher crew.
Each pet and their owners have distinctive personalities and part of that personality is displayed with the collar you choose. So take your time and find the right accessory for the lifestyle of you and your pet.
